Manchester Harriers junior section produced some stunning results at the 2014 Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships held on a flat course at Leigh in early January.
Highlights of the day included Sam Tarry winning the under 15s championship with Donnacha Maguire, Beth Barlow and Alice Stiles also securing individual medals. Our under 13 girl’s team also won the team race.
Eleanor Kenny, Alice Stiles, Grace de Campos and Emily Hughes of the under 13 Girls team
Connor Fazakerleyenjoyed a great run finishing just outside the medals in 4th place. He was ably supported by Marco Lavorini who finished 21st in his first race of the season.
Sam Tarrylooked strong from the start and pulled away from the field after the first 400 metres ultimately winning the race by 17 seconds. A great achievement and well deserved given the level of training he undertakes. Ben Skertchly ran very well working his way through the field to finish 9th in his first year as an under 15.
This was the first race of the season that we have been able to field a team and the boys did excellently to finish second in the team race. Donnacha Maguire looked comfortable throughout and raced away from the Bury AC athlete in the last 200 metres to secure second place overall. Matt Graham ran well finishing 12th and Thomas Taylor, in his first run of the season following injury finished 14th. The return of both of these athletes bodes well for the rest of the season.
Matt Graham, Thomas Taylor and Donnacha Maguire the victorious under 17 Boys team
Although he is getting a bit old now (for a junior) well done to Jonny Stewart who finished 6th in the under 20s following another very solid performance.
We managed to field eight girls in the under 13s race, with our A team of Alice Stiles, Eleanor Kenny and Grace de Campos securing first place overall in the team race and the B team agonisingly missing out on third place by one point to Stockport Harriers A team.
In the individuals race we seemed to run as a team with Alice Stiles securing the bronze medal finishing 3rd followed closely behind by Eleanor Kenny in 4th and Grace de Campos in 5th. Emily Hughes ran another solid race continuing the improvement that has been seen this year finishing 8th.Beth Smyth was 15th with Megan Taylor close behind in 16th, Lydia Butt was 31st with Chloe Davies 46th.
Well done to all the girls and it is great that we achieved such as strong turn out for the race.
Following a rest over Christmas Beth Barlow returned to top form securing a clear 2nd place behind Katy Whiteoak of Stockport Harriers. This is Beth’s first year at under 15s and this was a great run. Alicia Brogan also ran well finishing 32nd.
This race also counts as the main selection race to represent Greater Manchester at the prestigious Inter Counties Championship to be held in Birmingham in March. As a result of their placings, Connor Fazakerley, Sam Tarry and Donnacha Maguire have been automatically selected for the respective GM boys’ teams with Alice Stiles, Eleanor Kenny and Beth Barlow being selected for the girls’ teams. It is likely that further athletes will be confirmed in the coming weeks and lets hope we can get ten athletes selected as was the case in 2013.
